Year 1 of the Energy Freedom Challenge, also known as EFC 2006, has been designed as a condensed version of future challenges. The scope of data required to participate in EFC 2006 has been limited to local government electricity purchases for internal, operational use because this data can be tracked fairly easily.

± In the summer of 2006, enrolled cities will submit tracking data for Year 1 of the Challenge. Data will reflect energy usage for either the prior 12-month calendar or fiscal year according to each city’s preference. Tracking data must be received in complete and proper form by August 31, 2006. Tracking data submitted by the late entry deadline will be subject to a late filing fee of $50.
§ A panel of judges selected by the Union of Concerned Scientists will evaluate each city’s tracking report during the review and judging period in the fall of 2006. Winners of EFC 2006 will be announced at a press event in December.
ƒ The “Green Carpet” awards ceremony and celebration for EFC 2006 is slated for January 2007. The date and host city will be announced in the fall of 2006.
